On April 29, 2013, the Chicago Fire Department received a call about a fire at a car wash in the Englewood area. Engine 47 was the first to arrive and reported a large one-story commercial building with a bow-string truss roof that was fully engulfed in flames. A Still & Box alarm was immediately requested by the commanding officer on scene.
Upon the arrival of the 18th Battalion, the decision was made to go defensive due to the unstable truss roof and the intense fire conditions. A 2-11 alarm was then activated. Tower Ladder 34, Tower Ladder 37, and Squad 5A were deployed for aerial operations. Despite the efforts of the initial units, the fire remained heavy, prompting a 3-11 alarm to be called in by the Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner (2-1-11).
The operation continued in a defensive mode for approximately two hours until the alarm was eventually struck out by the Deputy Fire Commissioner (2-1-5). The following companies responded to the incident:
**Full Still Alarm Companies:**
Engines 47/60, Tower Ladder 37, Truck 15, Squad 5, Command Van 2-7-4, and both the 17th and 18th Battalions.
