According to foreign media reports, the new virtual reality technology developed in Australia is exported to China, and this technology will improve the safety of Chinese miners. This new technology, called the i-cinema system, uses 360-degree safety analog images to train miners so that they know how to survive in an underground accident. This equipment has already been installed in the research institute of China Shenyang Coal Technology Engineering Group.
This 360-degree safe analog image allows miners to enter a virtual underground world. People are surrounded by a ring-shaped screen and wear 3D glasses. By watching the sounds from 12 projectors and 24 audio channel systems, they will feel themselves in the underground mine.
Each time attending training up to 30 people, they can take a virtual underground minecart and navigate a virtual laneway modeled after the New South Wales mine in Australia. Participants in the training said that they felt as if they could reach out and touch the bolts in the mine roof.
The Australian-made simulation system is in many respects like a large-scale video game machine. The purpose is to train miners so that they can see the danger signs of various mine disasters. One of the biggest threats to coal mines is the gas explosion. The simulation system tries to prepare the miners for the worst accident.
Participating in this technology research and development is the teaching staff of the Art School, School of Engineering and School of Mines of the University of New South Wales in Sydney. They also refer to the mining industry, trade unions, and government information. This study took 7 years. After successful research, it was used in four locations around New South Wales and thousands of miners have been trained in the past three years.
