This year, China's coal demand growth may slow down

In response to weak market demand, Foton Motors defied the trend by securing a series of large orders, marking a strong start in 2009. On January 9th, Zhao Jingguang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee at Foton Motors, expressed great excitement during the signing ceremony for the Midi Beijing-listed public transport bus procurement project in Changping District. He highlighted that Foton had shifted from a broad expansion strategy to a more focused and efficient dual-wheel growth approach, reinforcing its sustained development and stable performance. Midi has played a key role in opening up new markets. Recently, Foton launched its first China-originated CDV model, connecting Beijing to Beijing. Industry insiders believe that Foton has developed a unique model of transitioning from commercial vehicles to passenger vehicles. Experts suggest that in the current economic climate, introducing such models is a smart move to capture market gaps, indicating that Foton’s competitiveness and technological capabilities have reached a new level. Looking ahead, Foton is taking the European route with its new models. While major automakers cut R&D spending amid market uncertainty, Foton increased its investment in product development, building a solid foundation for future growth. As China's leading commercial vehicle brand, Foton now holds nine major product brands that are either industry leaders or strong contenders. In 2008, Foton sold over 410,000 units, maintaining the top position in the domestic commercial vehicle market for five consecutive years and light trucks for ten straight years. On January 6th, Foton Motor introduced ten new 2009 models, including heavy, medium, and light trucks, as well as passenger cars, totaling over 100 models. Among them, the Euromax Intercontinental version with a Cummins 3.8L engine made its global debut and became the highlight of the launch event. This model features the world’s first ISF series 3.8L four-cylinder high-pressure direct-injection diesel engine designed by Cummins’ U.S. headquarters and European R&D center. Industry analysts believe this marks Foton’s clear shift toward the European market. In addition to its diverse product lineup, Foton is also focusing on the future of the automotive industry—new energy vehicles. Since 2003, Foton has prioritized new energy R&D as part of its strategic shift from growth through strategy to growth through capability. By 2005, Foton invested 600 million yuan to build a key laboratory for energy efficiency and emissions reduction. By December 28 last year, Foton established its first "New Energy Vehicle Design and Manufacturing Industrial Base," aiming to produce 5,000 new energy buses and 400,000 highly efficient engines annually. Foton’s achievements in new energy vehicles go beyond production. Recently, Beijing Bus Group signed a contract with Foton for 800 hybrid bus units and chassis—the largest single new energy vehicle deal in China. Today, new energy vehicles have become a powerful tool for Foton’s success in tough times. In the "Public Transport Procurement Agreement" signed between Futian Automobile and Changping District on January 9th, the Changping government acknowledged Foton’s excellence in new energy vehicle design and manufacturing, expressing support for future purchases of independent brands and innovative technologies.
