According to customs statistics, in 2003, imports of automobile parts through the port of Guangdong Province totaled US$8.1 billion, an increase of 53.6% over the same period in 2002, of which imports were US$800 million, an increase of 53.9%. The automobile parts imported via the Guangdong Port were mainly produced in Japan, Taiwan and France, and were imported 710 million yuan, 36.88 million US dollars and 11.22 million US dollars, respectively, an increase of 54.2%, 1.6 times and 1.7 times.
It is reported that the import ports for auto parts are relatively concentrated and are imported at 440 million and 180 million U.S. dollars through ports at Huangpu Customs Port and Guangzhou Customs Zone, respectively, which is an increase of 35.6% and 70.7%, accounting for 55% and 22.6% of the total import volume at Guangdong ports.
According to China’s commitment to China’s accession to the WTO, the average import tariffs on auto parts will gradually decrease from 25% to 10%; this year China will cancel the import quota management of some auto parts, and will cancel import quotas in 2005, and auto parts imports will continue. With growth, the domestic auto parts industry will become more competitive.
