The final ceremony for the 1 millionth automobile in 2009 in Liuzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was held on November 9 at the General Assembly Assembly Workshop of Wuling Shanghai General Motors Wuling Co., Ltd., and Liuzhou became the first prefecture-level city with annual automobile output exceeding one million units in China. After Beijing and Shanghai, the city’s third annual output exceeded one million cities.
After 40 years of construction and development, the Liuzhou automobile industry has become the city's largest pillar industry. In 2008, the total industrial output value of the city reached one-third of the city's total industrial output value. Liuzhou currently has more than 410 automobile manufacturing companies and parts and components, total assets of 31.8 billion yuan, and 46,000 employees. There are 9 various types of vehicle companies, among which there are 3 vehicle chassis qualification companies, 4 special vehicle production companies, and 2 low-speed truck production companies. The company has formed a production capacity of 900,000 mini-vehicles, 80,000 trucks, 50,000 multi-function passenger cars, 60,000 special vehicles, 20,000 low-speed vehicles, and 1 million engines. It has cultivated national famous brands with independent intellectual property rights such as "Wuling", "By the Dragon", "Balong", "Funny" and "Jingyi". From January to September of this year, the total output value of the auto industry above designated size in Liuzhou was 51.90 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 44.2%. The output value accounted for 40% of the total industrial output value of the city above designated size; the profit and tax was 5.14 billion yuan, an increase of 92.5% over the same period of last year. From January to October, the total production and sales volume of automobiles in the city reached 961,000 and 948,000, respectively, an increase of 58.1% and 59.4% year-on-year respectively.
At present, under the traction of vehicle companies, Liuzhou’s auto parts industry has formed a relatively complete industrial chain and agglomeration effects, with engines, front/rear axles, gearboxes, steel rings, shock absorbers, and refrigeration compressors. Air-conditioning systems, body panels, stamping and welding parts and other important parts of the mass production capacity. The supporting rate in the city is close to 50%, the local supporting rate for micro-auto parts and components is 62%, and the local matching rate for commercial vehicle parts and components is about 27%.
Yang Daoxi, vice chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Government, said at the off-line ceremony for the 1 millionth automobile that the automobile industry is one of the 100 billion yuan industries built by the forces of Guangxi's Jujing District. Its development goal is to form a center in the region. Two major bases and three systems, that is, building Liuzhou into the center of Guangxi Automobile Industry Cluster. As the leading group of the Guangxi automobile industry, Liuzhou should take the annual output of more than one million units as a new starting point, continuously expand the production scale of the entire vehicle, further consolidate and expand market share, and at the same time, focus on the research and development of passenger cars to enhance and optimize the product structure to lead the industry.
