Shanghai Institute of Optics and Optoelectronics high non-linear quartz photonic crystal fiber made progress

    Researcher Liao Meisong, lead researcher of high-power laser unit technology research center of Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made new progress in the development of highly nonlinear photonic crystal fibers led by Liu Yin W ?, Wu DaKun et al.

    Highly non-linear photonic crystal fiber due to the ordinary step-type fiber does not have the special dispersion and high nonlinearity, is to produce supercontinuum laser core device. Supercontinuum is a high brightness broadband light source with ultra-wide spectrum and high directivity. It has important applications in biomedicine, ultrafast spectroscopy, optical fiber communication, high resolution imaging and sensing technology.

    The high-nonlinearity quartz photonic crystal fiber consists of a plurality of small-size core surrounded by air micropores in the order of the wavelength. The structure of the high-nonlinear quartz photonic crystal fiber is complicated and complicated, and the drawing process is extremely difficult. Based on the previous simulation of nonlinear optical fiber structure, the research group produced a special structured optical fiber preform by using the stacking method. By precisely controlling the parameters of temperature, tension and velocity in the optical fiber drawing process, The fiber laser pumped photonic crystal fiber has an outer diameter of 120 μm, a core diameter of 5 μm and a zero dispersion wavelength of 1040 nm. Using this fiber, a supercontinuum output spectrum with a spectrum covering the entire visible band was obtained with a pump of a 1055 nm femtosecond fiber laser.

    The successful development of this optical fiber symbolizes that Shanghai Optical Machinery has mastered the key technologies of the complete link including high nonlinear photonic crystal fiber structure design, preform manufacturing and wire drawing, laying an important foundation for the future application of this optical fiber device.
