Dear Team,
I hope this message finds you well. Many of you have already seen the news about my decision to step down as CEO, but I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts personally. Over the past couple of years, I've had numerous conversations with the board regarding this transition, and today marks an important chapter for me and for Autodesk.
I am incredibly proud of what we've achieved together during my time here. When I first stepped into the role of CEO, Autodesk was at a pivotal point. Today, we're stronger financially, culturally, and strategically than ever before. The subscription-based business model is thriving, our cloud initiatives are showing promising results, and we've resolved some significant challenges with our stakeholders. This feels like the right moment for both the company and for me personally.
For those asking, no, I'm not leaving to spend more time with my family—I’m fortunate enough to have a family that doesn't need more of my attention. Instead, I’m looking forward to diving deeper into my passion projects, especially working with my robots in the workshop. There are also a few other ventures I’m exploring, and I'll share more details soon.
Autodesk has been my home for nearly two decades, and I’ve been humbled by the opportunity to lead such a remarkable organization. It's been an honor to work alongside such talented individuals who are committed to excellence. Together, we've transformed industries and created tools that fundamentally change how people design, build, and innovate.
As I reflect on our journey, there are three pillars I believe define a successful company: **great**, **good**, and **important**. A great company delivers exceptional financial performance. A good company fosters a positive culture and values its people. An important company makes a meaningful impact on society. I believe we’ve excelled in all three areas.
**Great**: Under our leadership, Autodesk has grown exponentially. Our market cap has surged from $2 billion to over $18 billion. These achievements didn’t come easily, but they were always rooted in long-term thinking. While some might prioritize quick wins, we focused on sustainable growth—a philosophy I deeply believe in.
**Good**: Culture matters, and ours is something special. Diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect aren’t just buzzwords—they’re woven into the fabric of our workplace. Every day, you embody these values through your actions, reinforcing the sense of belonging and purpose that makes Autodesk unique.
**Important**: As creators of the tools used by architects, engineers, filmmakers, and countless others, we bear a tremendous responsibility. Seeing the incredible projects brought to life with our software fills me with immense pride. From skyscrapers to animated blockbusters, we’ve played a key role in shaping the modern world. I’ll always cherish the trust placed in us by our customers.
Before signing off, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who’s been instrumental in Autodesk’s success. To Carol Bartz, thank you for believing in me and guiding me early on. To our customers, you inspire us daily. To our partners and shareholders, your loyalty means the world. To my colleagues, particularly the leadership team, your dedication and innovation drive us forward. And to each of you—our employees—I can’t emphasize enough how much I admire your talent, creativity, and passion.
Stepping away doesn’t diminish my commitment to Autodesk. I’ll remain involved as a board member, ready to assist during this transition. And while I’m excited about what lies ahead, I’ll forever carry the lessons and memories of my tenure here.
Thank you for everything,
Carl
