At Autodesk University, the company announced exciting developments in its Forge developer platform, which is gaining traction among developers and customers of all sizes. The platform is being used to build and deploy apps and services aimed at driving innovation in manufacturing and construction. Recently, a significant update was rolled out to make the process of developing on Forge even more streamlined.
One of the highlights is the introduction of a next-generation cloud application framework designed to transform how design and engineering projects are handled. Moving away from single-user, file-based desktop CAD experiences, Forge is paving the way for a collaborative, cloud-based CAD environment. The Reality Capture API is now live, helping to optimize end-to-end workflows. Users can look forward to enhanced capabilities on Forge, including upgrades to the BIM 360 API and the upcoming Design Automation API integration with Autodesk Revit and Inventor.
A new Webhooks API will also allow Forge users to seamlessly connect their apps with popular third-party software. Autodesk is also developing platform solutions that sit atop robust cloud services, empowering customers to build custom solutions and workflows using the Forge platform. The Forge Application Framework Software Development Kit will feature reusable and modular components such as high-frequency data management, solid modeling, and web graphics, along with tools to simplify app creation and publishing.
In a strategic partnership with Dropbox, Forge is being utilized to introduce native .DWG preview capabilities directly within Dropbox. With over 35 new .DWG files added every second, Dropbox is home to one of the largest collections of Autodesk design files globally. This collaboration aims to enhance cloud-based collaboration for business users, simplifying and streamlining content sharing.
"Billy Blau, global head of business development and partnerships at Dropbox, noted, 'With AutoCAD being one of the most widely used applications among professionals in architecture, engineering, construction, and manufacturing, our collaboration with Forge will offer innovative features that our users have been eagerly awaiting.'"
Amy Bunszel, SVP of Design & Creation Products at Autodesk, added, "Our partnership with Dropbox leverages Forge's web services to provide a seamless collaboration experience for our shared customers. This integration reduces the barriers for accessing, reviewing, and transferring data between tasks."
Autodesk has also made headlines with its latest investment through the Forge Fund, leading a funding round for Assemble Systems, Inc. Assemble Systems offers a SaaS platform that processes BIM models, drawings, and point clouds, enabling construction professionals to manage, query, and integrate data into essential workflows like bidding, estimating, project management, scheduling, and financial tracking. The integration of Assemble Systems with Forge bolsters the BIM 360 pre-construction offering and supports data management, quantification, estimation, and related workflows.
Assemble Systems pulls models from Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and other design systems, organizing them into usable construction packages for quantification, subcontractor views, and other critical processes. As designs evolve, Assemble automatically updates and reports impacts on project quantities, costs, and schedules, making construction more efficient and reliable.
Recently, the Forge Fund invested in startups SmartVid.io, ManufactOn, and Project Frog, aligning with the rise of industrialized construction. This trend mirrors manufacturing practices, reducing risks and increasing profitability. Autodesk's investments aim to create a smarter, simpler, and safer construction ecosystem.
Jim Lynch, Autodesk's vice president of construction products, remarked, "Autodesk's Forge Fund investments reflect our commitment to meeting new market demands as industrialized construction becomes more integrated into AEC workflows. By leveraging our cloud technology, we're enhancing productivity, reducing risks, and boosting profit margins for construction teams and owners."
These announcements underscore Autodesk's dedication to fostering innovation and collaboration across industries, positioning itself at the forefront of technological advancement.
