CFD Apparatus History – Ward LaFrance

I just received some fascinating materials from Bill Friedrich to enrich our ongoing series about the Ward LaFrance apparatus utilized by the Chicago Fire Department (CFD). Bill was kind enough to share copies of the 1970 Ward LaFrance sales brochures showcasing these iconic vehicles. If you're catching up, you can revisit previous posts here, here, here, and here. One of the highlights is this captivating brochure featuring all seven of the Ward LaFrance 2,000-GPM engines that served Chicago back in 1970. It's part of Bill Friedrich’s extensive collection, and it provides an incredible glimpse into the firefighting technology of the era. The accompanying image offers a detailed view of each unit, capturing their power and precision. Another standout piece is the brochure highlighting every angle of a single 1970 Ward LaFrance 2,000-GPM engine destined for Chicago. This document is packed with comprehensive specifications, giving us a deeper understanding of what made these machines so advanced for their time. Again, it’s part of Bill’s collection, which continues to be an invaluable resource for enthusiasts like me. Finally, there’s a brochure dedicated to the impressive 1970 Ward LaFrance/Grove 100-foot aerial ladder trucks. These firefighting marvels came equipped with 300-gallon booster tanks, powerful Hale 2CBP booster pumps, and Grove 4S-100 ladders. As if that wasn’t enough, they also included numerous specialized pieces of equipment designed to enhance firefighting capabilities. This particular item is another gem from Bill Friedrich’s collection. As someone who loves delving into the history of firefighting equipment, these documents provide a treasure trove of information. They not only highlight the technical specifications but also evoke a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era when firefighting technology was evolving rapidly. I’m incredibly grateful to Bill for sharing these resources with us, as they help paint a vivid picture of how firefighting evolved in Chicago during the 1970s.
