Late last night, I got a message from Art Zern about a significant fire incident. He mentioned that emergency services were dispatched around 9:56 PM to a structure fire, where the first arriving unit, E-2, found the building fully engulfed in flames on three sides, with signs of fire spreading to an adjacent building ("B" exposure). E-2 immediately switched to a defensive strategy, using their deck gun and two 2.5-inch hand lines to tackle the fire on the B-side. Meanwhile, E-1 arrived shortly after and connected a hose to the D-side of the building.
The initial firefighting efforts seemed promising, thanks in part to the timely arrival of DeKalb's T-1 team, who helped manage the situation despite some structural challenges. However, things became complicated when it was discovered that the fire was fueled by natural gas. Firefighters had to contain the blaze while waiting for Nicor to arrive and safely shut off the gas supply. This added another layer of complexity to the operation, but eventually, they managed to keep the situation under control.
As the fire escalated, it triggered a general alarm response, bringing additional support from Cortland, GK, Hampshire, Burlington, and other nearby departments. Even Sycamore’s own police and public works teams joined in to assist. With combined efforts, they were able to bring the fire under control within roughly an hour, though crews stayed on-site for another couple of hours afterward to ensure there were no hidden embers left.
Thankfully, there were no injuries reported among either the firefighters or residents. Although two people at the scene were evaluated for smoke inhalation, both declined further medical attention. The damage to the main house at 1319 Janet Street is estimated to be around $300,000, covering both the structure and its contents. Interestingly, the heat from the fire also caused significant damage to the neighboring house at 1311 Janet Street, amounting to approximately $50,000 in repair costs.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined as investigators continue their work. It was a commendable effort by all involved, especially given the challenging conditions. Thanks to the teamwork between multiple agencies, what could have been a catastrophic event was successfully mitigated.
I snapped a few photos from the Sycamore FD Facebook page, which give a good sense of the scale of the fire and the hard work put in by everyone involved. It’s always humbling to see communities come together like this during emergencies.
