Spanish theme park announces solar plans

Many of you reading this are already familiar with the advantages of installing solar panels in your homes. Some of you might even be early adopters of the community energy concept, embracing a smarter way to store energy and cut costs (if you’re not, now’s the time to consider it). 

However, a theme park in Spain is about to push the boundaries even further with an ambitious solar power project that’s nothing short of remarkable. 

Europe’s biggest self-sustaining energy hub

PortAventura World in Salou has unveiled plans for what they’re calling Europe’s largest ‘self-consumption’ energy farm. Spanning an area of 100,000 square meters—yes, meters, not miles—and featuring 22,000 solar panels, the facility will generate a peak output of 8.5MW. 

In a statement, the park’s managing director, Fernando Aldecoa, emphasized the significance of this initiative: “This solar park is a game-changer, driving progress toward a more sustainable future. It keeps us at the cutting edge of environmental responsibility and solidifies our position as leaders in eco-friendly tourism.”

Cutting carbon footprints

Set to go live in early 2020, the project comes with a price tag of over six million euros. According to experts, the solar farm is expected to slash energy-related CO2 emissions by 4,000 tons annually.
