2-Alarm fire in Deer Park, IL 10-3-13

It's early morning, and I just got this update from Larry Shapiro about a major house fire in Deer Park: The Lake Zurich Fire Department received an emergency call at 5:30 AM reporting flames coming from a large vacant house. This particular residence, which has been unoccupied for several years now, already had visible fire on its flat roof when the first firefighting units arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, the property is located in an area without nearby hydrants, so the first engine tried using its onboard water supply through the deck gun. Realizing they needed more resources, a tanker shuttle operation was quickly established. A second alarm was called in to request additional tankers, and large diameter hoses were laid out from Cuba Road all the way to the house, covering nearly an entire block. Despite the firefighters' best efforts, the blaze managed to severely damage both the roof and the attic areas. I've attached some photos taken by Larry Shapiro that really capture the intensity of the situation. You can see the flames shooting high into the air, illuminating the dark morning sky. The heat must have been incredible for those fighting the fire. Thankfully, there don't appear to be any reports of injuries, but it's clear this fire caused significant damage to the structure. I'll keep an eye out for further updates as they become available. It's always tough to see historic or residential buildings go up in flames, especially when they've been empty for so long. Hopefully, the community can come together to support the owners if necessary.
