Commercial fire in Harvey, 6-24-14

From Dennis McGuire, Jr.'s account: Around 10 PM last night, the Harvey Fire Department received a call about a fire at an auto repair shop located at 14829 S. Loomis. When the first fire truck arrived, it was clear that the single-story shop, measuring 50 by 60 feet, was completely engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to the roof. In the chaos, three firefighters suffered minor injuries and were rushed to the hospital. The incident commander promptly requested additional resources, triggering a full still alarm response from Box #2, which included sending an extra engine. [Attached are several photos taken by Dennis McGuire, Jr., capturing the intensity of the fire throughout the night. Each image shows different angles of the burning structure, highlighting the severity of the situation. The flames are clearly visible against the dark sky, illuminating the surrounding area.] --- I was on the scene pretty quickly after hearing the emergency dispatch. It’s always tough to see something like this happen, especially when you know people work there. The fire spread really fast—there wasn’t much time for anything but getting everyone out safely. Thankfully, no one inside got hurt, but those firefighters definitely had their hands full trying to control it. From what I could tell, the whole place went up like tinder once it caught fire. The photos don’t fully capture how loud and intense it was, though. You could feel the heat even from a distance. By the time backup arrived, the flames were already shooting high into the air. It took hours before they finally got it under control. Now, all that’s left is a charred shell of what used to be an active business. Hopefully, whoever owned it has insurance or some kind of support because starting over isn’t easy. If anyone knows the owners or staff, let them know they’re not alone in dealing with this. Fires like these can be devastating—not just financially, but emotionally too. Let’s hope things improve soon for everyone involved.
