At Autodesk, we're witnessing a major shift in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) industry. This transformation is driven by data, industry cloud solutions, and strategic investments in core products that are paving the way for outcome-based Building Information Modeling (BIM).
One of the most exciting developments is the new connection between Autodesk Forma and Autodesk Docs, Autodesk’s AECO data repository. This integration allows teams to unify BIM workflows across design, construction, and operations, creating a more seamless and collaborative environment.
Additionally, the beta release of Autodesk Assistant in Autodesk Construction Cloud now enables users to ask questions about their specification documents using natural language, making it easier to extract relevant information and improve project communication.
The foundation of outcome-based BIM lies in data—data that's granular, accessible, and open. This kind of data helps meet tight deadlines, improves productivity through AI-powered insights, and supports better decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
We’re working closely with our customers to build the future of BIM. At Autodesk University 2024, we’ll be sharing our progress toward this vision.
**Data-Powered Collaboration Across the Project Lifecycle**
Autodesk Forma, the AECO industry cloud, is designed to connect project data from within Autodesk and third-party tools, unifying BIM workflows across all teams involved in designing, building, and operating the built environment. The key to unlocking this value is Autodesk Docs, our central data hub that connects, organizes, and secures data across solutions like AutoCAD, Revit, and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
Earlier this year, we launched the AEC Data Model API, an important step toward enabling more granular data for Autodesk Docs users. Now, we’ve taken another significant step: Autodesk Forma is now connected to Autodesk Docs, bringing new opportunities for collaboration and connecting teams with project data in real time.
For example, the Forma Board, a digital whiteboard and collaboration tool, can now import visuals from Autodesk Docs files, allowing architects, engineers, and contractors to work together on live digital concepts.
This is just the beginning. Over time, the connection between Autodesk Forma and Autodesk Docs will enhance the integration between Forma and Revit, creating a powerful link between planning tools and detailed design capabilities.
We’re also launching the commercial version of Autodesk Workshop XR, an immersive design review workspace connected to Autodesk Docs. This tool allows design teams and stakeholders to walk through 3D models at human scale, providing a deeper understanding of spatial experiences and helping catch design issues early.
**Accelerating Better Outcomes with Data and AI**
Getting data right is essential for advancing outcome-based BIM and improving customer workflows with AI. At AU 2024, we’ll be discussing exciting advancements from Autodesk AI that boost productivity, creativity, and sustainability.
One such feature is the Embodied Carbon Analysis in Autodesk Forma, currently in beta. This AI-powered tool allows designers to measure the carbon footprint of materials early in the design process, helping achieve sustainability goals. It’s part of Autodesk’s Total Carbon Analysis for Architects in the AEC Collection.
Another innovation is the beta release of Autodesk Assistant in Autodesk Construction Cloud, which makes it easier to find and use information from specification documents. With natural language prompts, users can ask specific questions, generate lists, or draft summaries, saving time and reducing risk.
We’re also expanding our partnership with Esri, planning to make more of its data available within Autodesk Forma. This will give architects access to contextual geographic data earlier in the design process, helping them create more sustainable and resilient projects.
**Building the Future by Investing in the Core**
Investing in our core portfolio—Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Autodesk Construction Cloud—is crucial for the AECO industry transformation. These products are connected to Autodesk Docs and are being continuously improved to drive business resilience and efficiency.
Recent updates include AutoCAD 2025, which opens files twice as fast as the previous version, and Revit 2025, which delivers highly requested features like Sheet Collections and PDF upgrades.
These improvements help customers deliver better outcomes and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.
**Applying the Future of BIM, Today**
Companies like Baker Barrios Architects are already seeing the benefits of outcome-based BIM. Using Autodesk Forma, they've created a streamlined digital workflow that connects multiple software tools into one platform.
Wayne Dunkelberger, Chief Design Officer at Baker Barrios, calls Autodesk Forma a “seismic shift†for the firm, saying it allows them to see what the real world will feel like when the building is actually on site.
As we continue to innovate, the future of BIM is becoming a reality today. With data, AI, and tools like Autodesk Forma, we're moving toward a future with less waste, less knowledge loss, and fewer obstacles from design to construction to operation.
