Carol Stream DC Hoff

The *Daily Herald* recently published an article featuring an interview with Bob Hoff, the newly appointed deputy chief of the Carol Stream Fire Protection District. Hoff, who previously served as the fire commissioner of Chicago — the nation’s second-largest fire department — had planned to retire and focus on teaching at the Illinois Fire Service Institute and spending more time with his family. But in February 2024, after stepping down from his role in Chicago, he received a job offer that brought him back into the field. He now serves as deputy chief for the Carol Stream Fire Protection District, which covers 15 square miles, including parts of Bloomingdale, Winfield, and Glendale Heights. Since April, Hoff has been actively involved in responding to calls, leading training sessions, and working closely with longtime friend and colleague, Fire Chief Rick Kolomay. Hoff was appointed as Chicago’s fire commissioner by then-Mayor Richard M. Daley in 2010. At the time, he intended to retire in December 2023. However, his decision to take the new position in Carol Stream came amid speculation that it was related to his opposition to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan to reduce fire truck staffing from five to four firefighters. Hoff, however, denies any connection to political disagreements. “I didn’t leave because of the mayor,” Hoff said. “He couldn’t have been nicer. When he took office in 2011, he asked me to stay a few months longer to help with the transition. He was really great to me. All the bad stories you hear about are just rumors. He’s dynamic, full of energy, and wants good things for the city. It had nothing to do with him — it was just my own decision to change gears.” Hoff first met Kolomay in 1985 during a fire academy class, where Kolomay was the instructor and Hoff was a student. Over the years, their professional relationship deepened, and they even co-authored a firefighting training manual in 2003. By 2010, with Hoff in charge of Chicago’s fire department and Kolomay leading Carol Stream, the two departments began collaborating on joint training exercises. In February, Kolomay proposed a reorganization of the district’s leadership structure. Then-Deputy Fire Chief Perry Johnson was moved to a new civilian role as chief administrative officer, handling financial and operational responsibilities. Hoff was promoted to deputy chief, a sworn position that involves direct interaction with firefighters and hands-on training. He now earns a base salary of $115,000, slightly less than the $117,198 pension he receives from Chicago. The full article can be found HERE. Thanks, Chris.
