Cummins World's Second Largest R&D Center Opened in Wuhan

Reporter Zeng Yihui, Wuhan Report Recently, the East Asia Research and Development Center, established through a collaboration between Cummins and Dongfeng, officially opened in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first Sino-foreign joint venture R&D center dedicated specifically to the Chinese engine industry. Once the fourth phase of the project is completed, the center will become the second-largest R&D facility globally, following Cummins' main technology hub in the United States. This new research center is the fourth joint venture between Cummins and Dongfeng. Since their initial partnership, the two companies have formed several joint ventures, including Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., Shanghai Fleetguard Filters Co., Ltd., and Xiangfan Fleetguard Exhaust System Co., Ltd. Over the past two decades, the collaboration between Dongfeng and Cummins has evolved through multiple key stages. In 1986, they signed an agreement to produce Cummins B-Series engines. By 1996, they had jointly developed C-Series engines. In October 2005, they reached an agreement to co-develop a 13-liter fully electronically controlled heavy-duty diesel engine. The opening of the East Asia R&D Center is expected to elevate their technological cooperation to a new level. The R&D center will focus on a wide range of applications, including construction machinery, mining equipment, shipbuilding, power generation systems, rail engines, and critical components. In addition to traditional diesel engines, the center will also conduct research on hybrid technologies, natural gas (CNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and alternative fuels such as biodiesel. Furthermore, the East Asia R&D Center will integrate its resources and product platforms with other global Cummins R&D centers, enabling faster and more efficient development. This strategic move is aimed at driving innovation and maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving automotive and energy sectors. This development underscores Cummins’ long-term commitment to the Chinese market and its vision for sustainable growth through advanced technology and strong local partnerships.
