Recently, the Spring Grove Fire Protection District in McHenry County received an early delivery of their new pumper/tanker from Toyne, based in Breda, Iowa. Engine 1844 is equipped with an HME 1871 Spectr cab and tandem axle chassis, featuring a large extension and raised roof to accommodate the enclosed, top-mount pump panel. This impressive unit is expected to replace a 1985 Ford C-Series Pierce 1,250/1,000-gpm engine and a 1980 GMC 7,000/US Tanker 2,200-gallon tanker.
This pumper/tanker boasts a 1,500-gallon-per-minute (GPM) pump and is reported to have a 3,000-gallon water tank along with a 40-gallon foam tank. High-side compartments line both sides of the extended body, providing ample storage space. On the officer’s side, there is a hydraulic ladder rack that allows access to the ground ladders, while the driver’s side features an overhead hydraulic storage rack for the portable tank.
One unique aspect of Engine 1844 is its extendable discharge chutes located just behind the pump module on either side. These chutes allow the crew to discharge water directly into a portable tank, a feature not commonly found in traditional tankers. Interestingly, unlike many vehicles of this type, Engine 1844 does not have a rear chute.
The rear of the vehicle showcases NFPA-compliant chevron striping, adding both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Larry Shapiro captured these images, offering a detailed look at the innovative design and practical features of this new apparatus.
In addition to its operational capabilities, Engine 1844 reflects the Spring Grove FPD’s commitment to modernizing their fleet with state-of-the-art equipment. This pumper/tanker is more than just a vehicle; it represents the district’s dedication to enhancing firefighting efficiency and safety. With its robust specifications and thoughtful design, Engine 1844 is set to play a crucial role in protecting the community for years to come.
The enclosed top-mounted pump panel mirrors the setup of Spring Grove's 1999 HME/US Tanker pumper, maintaining consistency in operational familiarity for the firefighters. This continuity ensures that crews can seamlessly integrate the new truck into their operations without extensive retraining.
Overall, Engine 1844 is a significant upgrade for the Spring Grove FPD, combining advanced technology with practical design elements. Its arrival marks a new chapter in the district’s history, bolstering their firefighting resources and readiness. As the first responders who rely on this vehicle continue to put it through its paces, they will undoubtedly appreciate its reliability and performance, ensuring that they can respond effectively to emergencies in their area.
