Northfield EMS Box Alarm 4-21-13 – fiery crash on the Edens

Just after 9 p.m. on Sunday evening, the Northfield Fire Department was first called to a small brush fire along the Edens Expressway (I-94) near Willow Road. Shortly after, additional reports came in about a truck fire, prompting more units to respond. As emergency crews approached the expressway, they saw a massive fire burning in the center median of the northbound lanes, approximately half a mile north of Willow Road. Upon arrival, they found a fully involved tractor-trailer combination resting on top of a passenger car. An EMS Box Alarm was immediately activated, bringing ambulances from Winnetka, Wilmette, Northbrook, and Glencoe, as well as the Northfield ambulance already on scene for triage. Additional support included a Morton Grove squad, a Wilmette tower ladder and engine, and a Glenview truck, supplementing the local resources. Due to the intensity of the fire, Crash Truck 23 and Crash Truck 39—two ARFF units from Wheeling and Prospect Heights—were also dispatched. The car's occupants had already been evacuated by other drivers before emergency crews arrived. Three individuals, including the two people in the car that was trapped beneath the trailer, were taken to the hospital. This video was captured from the frontage road and shows the intense flames engulfing the wreckage. Prospect Heights Crash Truck 39 reported that they had used up their entire supply of extinguishing agent before leaving the scene. Photos by Larry Shapiro capture the dramatic aftermath. One image shows Wheeling Crash Truck 23 responding to the incident. Another highlights the passenger car wedged between the divider wall and the rear of the truck’s trailer. Firefighters from Northfield Squad 29 and Wilmette Tower 26 are seen on the highway after the fire was contained. An IDOT heavy-duty wrecker was also on site, helping to clear the wreckage. The rear section of the trailer, once dragged to the shoulder, is visible, along with the charred remains of the tractor. Several images show the extent of the damage, including exposed cargo and the wreckage left behind. A gallery with more photos is available here:
