Recently, Siemens announced its new achievements last month:
“At Hyde Airport in Dinslaken, Germany, the electric aircraft achieved a top speed of 340 km/h and a flight distance of more than 3 km. On March 24, 2017, the Extra 330LE electric aircraft made another first flight. For the first time, this flight enabled the electric aircraft to tow and fly the glider in the air. The electric aircraft towed another LS8 glider for flight test and realized the release of the glider in 76 seconds. ".
Often, battery weight is considered to be a major obstacle on the road to electric aircraft development. The electric aircraft developed by some startups need to improve the energy density of the battery before entering commercialization and marketization.
However, Siemens has been working to improve the capacity density of the motor supply unit. It is understood that the motor installed on the Extra 330LE electric prototype aircraft can have a battery output of 260 kW and a weight of only about 50 kg (about 110 lbs).
It is reported that Siemens will cooperate with Airbus in hybrid propulsion systems. The two companies will jointly develop hybrid prototype aircraft and their final products will be used for regional regional aviation services.
At present, Airbus has independently developed a prototype electric aircraft called the E-Fan concept. In 2015, this prototype became the world's first electric aircraft to leap into the English Channel.
