Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
More than 12 hours after the first smoke alarms went off, firefighters were still working to contain a huge fire that destroyed a warehouse at the Brewster Creek Business Park in Bartlett, a suburb west of Chicago.
The blaze broke out at Access, a secure document storage facility located at 1200 Humbracht Circle. The warehouse was filled from floor to ceiling with boxes of documents, which provided plenty of fuel for the fire. What started as just a few burning boxes quickly turned into a massive inferno, according to workers on the scene.
The incident began around 10 a.m., when officials said the sprinkler system initially managed to control the flames. However, when a series of steel racks collapsed, the fire became impossible to contain, leading to the destruction of the entire building.
In a statement, Access confirmed that all employees had safely evacuated and are now accounted for. The company is currently cooperating with local authorities to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage.
This account comes from Larry Shapiro:
I arrived at the scene around 10:30 a.m., when it had already escalated to a second alarm MABAS Box. The Mobile Ventilation Unit (MVU) was used to clear smoke from the warehouse after Bartlett companies had entered the building earlier. I mainly focused on capturing photos of the large number of emergency vehicles on site, as they were beginning to wrap things up and release most of the units, except for the Bartlett crews.
At 3:45 p.m., the situation worsened again, and a Box Alarm was called in for heavy fire conditions. It was clear this was no ordinary fire—this was a major event that required significant resources and time to bring under control.
