With the implementation of the strategy for the development of the western region and the improvement of the water transport environment after the Three Gorges Reservoir, the new container transport in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River has developed rapidly. According to statistics, the number of containers exported from Chongqing increased from 80,000 cases in 2001 to 250,000 cases in 2005, an increase of more than three times. The prospect of developing container transportation is promising. China Changhang Chongqing Changjiang Steamship Company seized market opportunities, actively adjusted development ideas, increased research and development of new ship types and new models in the reservoir area, and upgraded and optimized the capacity structure.

Based on the Engineering Design Institute, China Changhang Chongqing Co., Ltd. has set up a research group with outstanding technical personnel from the Ministry of Machinery Technology and Dongfeng Shipbuilding Corporation. After extensive research and careful selection, researchers have gradually overcome technical problems. In March 2003, China Changhang Chongqing Company successfully completed the design of 200 container ships in the Yangtze River and was approved by CCS (China Classification Society) Wuhan Review Center. In October 2004, the research and optimization of the design of the three ships in the initial stage of construction and operation made the new ship type more practical, technical and functional.
The 200-container new container ship of the Yangtze River has versatility, mainly adapting to the container transportation of the Yangtze River trunk line from Chongqing to Shanghai, and concurrently carrying groceries and dry bulk cargo transportation. It also has low energy consumption, fast speed, large load capacity and good maneuverability. Anti-pollution, beautiful appearance, low cost, etc., compared with the 97-box old container ship in the Yangtze River, the load increased by 100%, while the energy consumption only increased by 35%.
