Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:
One person was killed and another injured in a fire that broke out just before 8 p.m. Saturday night in the 5100 block of West Grand Avenue. One individual was taken to Community First Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead. The second victim was reported in serious condition at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. Firefighters are still on scene, but the structure remains unstable, preventing a full search of the building.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Emergency crews have been working tirelessly to contain the blaze, which has left the building a total loss. The area is still being secured, and officials say no further rescues can be conducted until the structure is deemed safe.
From Chicago Fire Media @CFDMedia:
"Two transports from the still and box on Grand. One victim very critical to Community First. Second victim serious to West Suburban."
"Update: The very critical patient has passed away. An adult male. Second victim is stable. Building is a total loss. Final search cannot be made due to instability."
"EMS Plan 1 at the scene of the 2-11 alarm for multiple injuries. Corrected multiple addresses."
"Still and box on Grand. Two transports. One critical, one serious."
Additional photos and updates from the scene show the intensity of the fire and the efforts of first responders. CFD MIKE shared some images of the aftermath, showing overhauling crews and equipment like Tower Ladder 14 and the 5-11 Club Canteen Unit. A short video is also expected to be released soon with more visuals from the incident.
This tragic event highlights the dangers faced by both residents and emergency personnel during large-scale fires. As the investigation continues, the community is coming together to support those affected.
