We had the chance to shoot a lookbook at the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences, a historic architectural gem located in Los Angeles along Silverlake Boulevard. Designed by the renowned Viennese-American architect Richard Neutra and funded by Dutch philanthropist Dr. CH Van Der Leeuw, this structure was considered revolutionary when it was completed in 1932. With its extensive use of glass, a rooftop garden, adjustable louvers, and mirrors, the building seamlessly integrates with its surroundings. It stands as a powerful example of Mid-Century Modern design and Neutra’s forward-thinking vision for the future of architecture.
Design
For our team, working in such an iconic space was truly inspiring. Our brand has always drawn from the creative spirit of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, a period heavily influenced by architects like Neutra and his students. The materials used in the VDL Studio and Residences were intentionally exposed, emphasizing a raw, honest aesthetic that resonates deeply with us at David Kind. We believe in sourcing premium materials and showcasing them with care, just as Neutra did in his designs.
Functionality
The rooms in the VDL Studio and Residences are designed with versatility and function in mind. They feature modular layouts and built-in systems that make them both practical and beautiful. The warm color palette and thoughtful layout made it the perfect setting for our lookbook. It felt natural to pair this space with our handmade eyewear, as both embody a sense of timeless craftsmanship and style.
History
Today, the VDL Studio and Residences are preserved and managed by the College of Environmental Design and Department of Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona. It was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Visitors can take guided tours on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with admission fees set at $15 for adults and $10 for seniors, students, and faculty. Unfortunately, due to ongoing health concerns, the house is currently closed to the public until further notice.
At David Kind, we find inspiration in innovative thinkers and designers who push boundaries while staying rooted in tradition. We blend time-honored craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to create eyewear that's not only beautiful but also meaningful. To discover more about how our eyewear is crafted, click here.
