It was a true honor for us to have the chance to shoot a lookbook at the iconic Neutra VDL Studio and Residences, located on Silverlake Boulevard in Los Angeles. Designed by the renowned Viennese-American architect Richard Neutra and funded by Dutch philanthropist Dr. CH Van Der Leeuw, this architectural gem was groundbreaking when it was completed in 1932. The building is a perfect blend of modernism and nature, featuring large glass panels, a rooftop garden, adjustable louvers, and mirrors that seamlessly connect the interior with the outside world.
As a brand deeply inspired by mid-century design and the visionaries of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, we found the VDL Studio and Residences to be an incredible source of inspiration. The materials used were intentionally exposed, reflecting a philosophy that resonates strongly with our own approach at David Kind. We believe in highlighting the beauty of natural materials, and the VDL House exemplifies that principle in its purest form.
The space itself is not only visually stunning but also highly functional. Every room is designed with multi-use purposes in mind, offering flexibility and practicality. The warm color palette and built-in features made it an ideal setting for our lookbook, especially when paired with our handmade eyewear. It was a natural fit—both the architecture and our designs emphasize timeless elegance and purposeful craftsmanship.
Today, the VDL Studio and Residences are maintained by the College of Environmental Design and the Department of Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona. It has been designated as a National Historic Landmark, and while public tours are typically available on Saturdays, the site is currently closed due to ongoing health concerns. However, we hope to visit soon and continue drawing inspiration from this architectural masterpiece.
At David Kind, we take pride in blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology to create eyewear that stands the test of time. Our process is rooted in innovation, yet guided by the values of quality and intentionality. To discover more about how our eyewear is crafted, click here.
