The Daily Herald published a heartwarming story about Rolling Meadows firefighters who went above and beyond to support a young burn victim during his recovery.
Firefighter Rick Acosta from Rolling Meadows recently visited La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where he was delighted to see an iPad charging next to the bed of 8-year-old Adorian Fentry. It was a touching reminder that the gift Acosta and fellow members of Rolling Meadows Firefighters Local 3075 had given him back in March was being used to help him stay connected with family and friends.
The story began in March when Adorian accidentally knocked over a candle while sitting on a cocktail table at home, causing severe burns that covered 35% of his body. He was rushed to the hospital for extensive treatment and rehabilitation at La Rabida, a facility on Chicago’s South Side.
Knowing that Adorian would be unable to see his family or classmates except on weekends, the firefighters decided to take action. They pooled their money—some even using their own savings—to buy two iPads. The devices were chosen for their dual-facing cameras, which would allow Adorian to video call his loved ones using FaceTime and Skype.
“When we deal with children in traumatic situations, it really hits close to home,†Acosta said. “Our union members stepped up without hesitation, donating from their own pockets. Even our fire chief contributed to make this possible.â€
“We just wanted to bring some joy into Adorian’s life,†he added. “And I think we succeeded.â€
In May, eight firefighters from Rolling Meadows made the trip to La Rabida to surprise Adorian with the gifts. Four of them were the same firefighters who had responded to the original 911 call in March.
“His eyes lit up when he saw us walk in,†said firefighter Colin Barr. “Then, when we gave him the iPads, he was absolutely thrilled.â€
But the real moment came when Adorian left his wheelchair to shake their hands and thank them personally. “It was incredible to see how strong and brave he was,†Barr said. “He stayed calm throughout the whole ordeal, and now he's showing so much gratitude.â€
For the firefighters, the visit was more than just a gesture—it was a reminder of why they chose this profession. “Seeing his smile, hearing his thanks, it all makes it worth it,†Barr said.
