Established by the Tianhua Chemical Machinery and Automation Research and Design Institute, the National Drying Technology and Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center has been actively advancing its mission since receiving official approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology in November of last year. The center focuses on key national projects, driving innovation in drying technology and equipment. Significant progress has been made in localizing these technologies, with notable achievements in both the iron and steel and petrochemical industries.
In particular, the coke oven coal moisture control device developed for the iron and steel industry, along with the one-million-ton PTA (purified terephthalic acid) drying technology and equipment for the petrochemical sector, have reached internationally advanced standards. Following the successful deployment of the PTA dryer at Sinopec Luoyang Branch’s 325,000 tons/year PTA plant, the center continued to explore the theoretical foundations of CTA/PTA (crude terephthalic acid/p-terephthalic acid) drying. Through industrial testing, validation, and model refinement, they mastered the core design technologies for the CTA/PTA drying process.
In 2007, the center delivered a 600,000-ton/year CTA/PTA dryer to Jialong Chemical Fiber Corporation. In February 2008, it secured a contract for the development of the CTA/PTA dryer for Sinopec Yizheng Chemical Fiber’s 1 million-ton/year PTA project. This project uses China’s own intellectual property process technology, and the accompanying CTA/PTA dryer is the largest steam tube rotary dryer independently developed in China. It was scheduled for delivery and installation in March 2009.
The coking coal moisture control technology significantly improves coal quality while reducing consumption. By using heat exchange to lower the moisture content of coal entering the furnace from 10% to 6%, it minimizes heat loss in coke ovens and enhances coke quality. The National Drying Center's steam drying technology utilizes low-pressure steam from dry quenching as a heat source, employing an efficient steam pipe rotary dryer for indirect heat exchange and dust recycling. This system has been widely adopted in domestic plants such as Baoshan Iron & Steel, Shanxi Huijin Stainless Steel, and Panzhihua Iron & Steel, due to its energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and economically beneficial performance.
In January 2008, the 330 tons/hour coal moisture conditioning system at Baoshan Iron and Steel Group began on-site installation. The main drying equipment was expected to be operational by August 2008, potentially reducing coke oven fuel consumption by 2–3 kg per ton after implementation. Shanxi Huijin Stainless Steel’s 400 tons/hour coal moisture control system was in the assembly phase, with plans for on-site installation and commissioning in March 2008. Taiyuan Iron and Steel Company implemented this technology, expecting a 30% reduction in coke oven fuel use and a 30–40% decrease in coking wastewater. Additionally, Panzhihua Iron and Steel’s 350 tons/hour humidity control system was in the design stage, with the main dryer expected to be installed by October 2008.
