On Sunday, the Naperville Fire Department responded to a significant 3-11 alarm fire that broke out in a popular downtown eatery. According to reports from The Daily Herald, the fire originated in a grease duct located inside the Rosebud Restaurant at 48 W. Chicago Avenue. As it spread, the flames quickly moved through the concealed voids within the historic structure, posing a serious challenge for firefighters. Throughout the incident, ten units from the Naperville Fire Department were actively engaged at the scene. Additional support was called in from neighboring towns due to the intensity of the blaze, including mutual aid from Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Plainfield, Lisle-Woodridge, Darien Woodridge, Wheaton, Warrenville, Aurora, Glen Ellyn, Tristate, Lockport, North Aurora, and Westmont.
One of the department's newest additions, Truck 1—a state-of-the-art Spartan/Crimson 103’ quint—was dispatched to the front of the building early on in the operation. Later, it was strategically relocated further down the street, where it became the focus of several photographs taken by local photographer Larry Shapiro. Meanwhile, both of Naperville’s tower ladders were put into action, with Squad 1, Engine 2, and two reserve engines also contributing to the firefighting efforts.
The fire proved to be particularly challenging, as it generated thick smoke that complicated the search for hidden flames within the walls and across multiple rooftops. Compounding the difficulty was the presence of a tongue-and-groove ceiling, which hindered efforts to pinpoint extensions of the blaze. Despite these obstacles, firefighters persevered, with crews from Naperville Tower 5 braving heavy smoke to investigate potential fire pockets along the parapet.
