The Spring Grove Fire Protection District in McHenry County recently welcomed their brand-new pumper/tanker from Toyne, based in Breda, Iowa. Known as Engine 1844, this impressive apparatus features an HME 1871 Spectr cab and tandem axle chassis, which has been extended and fitted with a raised roof to accommodate the enclosed, top-mount pump panel. It’s set to replace a 1985 Ford C-Series Pierce 1,250 GPM engine and a 1980 GMC 7,000 US Tanker with a 2,200-gallon capacity.
As you can see, Engine 1844 boasts a 1,500 GPM pump and is equipped with a 3,000-gallon water tank along with a 40-gallon foam tank. The long body on both sides includes high-side compartments, allowing access to the ladders on the officer’s side and the portable tank on the driver’s side through overhead hydraulic storage racks.
One unique aspect of this pumper/tanker is its enclosed, top-mounted pump panel, which is designed similarly to the 1999 HME/US Tanker pumper used by Spring Grove. The pump panel is cleverly integrated into the super command cab, ensuring both functionality and protection.
Another standout feature is the extendable chutes located on either side of the vehicle, positioned just behind the pump module. These allow for the efficient discharge of tank water directly into a portable tank. Interestingly, unlike many other tankers, this rig lacks a rear chute, opting instead for these strategically placed side chutes.
On the officer’s side, you’ll find additional high-side compartments and hydraulic ladder racks for storing ground ladders. The rear of Engine 1844 is marked with NFPA-compliant chevron striping, adding to its professional appearance.
