In recent years, an increasing number of light commercial vehicle manufacturers have been shifting their focus toward petrol engine models, leading to a more visible dual-engine competition strategy within the sector. While gasoline engines have traditionally dominated the automotive industry, diesel engines are rarely used in passenger cars. However, in the light commercial vehicle market, the situation is quite the opposite—diesel engines have long been widely adopted due to their efficiency and durability. But now, with more manufacturers entering the petrol segment, the dual-engine approach has become even more prominent.
Nanjing Iveco recently launched its new petrol engine model, following the release of the Turin V diesel engine in March this year. More recently, the company also introduced a commercial vehicle equipped with a gasoline engine. According to a company representative, the Turin V series features the Mitsubishi 4G64 multi-split petrol engine, which delivers a maximum power of 135 horsepower and a peak torque of 200 Nm. The main petrol engine models being promoted are designed for 10 to 13 seats, with prices comparable to diesel models, ranging from 150,000 to 160,000 yuan. These models are currently available in seven key regions: Beijing, Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Guangdong.
The representative added that the Turin V series is a large and versatile product line, with new models launching every month after the initial launch. The current lineup includes two wheelbase options—2800mm and 3310mm—with seating capacities ranging from 9 to 17. The vehicles come in various configurations, such as high-top, mid-top, trunk door, rear door, side sliding door, luxury, and standard versions. This flexibility makes the Turin V series highly adaptable to different customer needs.
Looking ahead, the company plans to continue expanding the Turin V product range, with new models expected to be released regularly. It is anticipated that by the end of this year, the full development of the Turin V series will be completed.
The adoption of a dual-engine strategy is not unique to Nanjing Iveco. Other manufacturers in the light commercial vehicle sector, such as Jiangling and Beiqi Foton, have also implemented similar strategies. For example, Jiangling previously paired the Mitsubishi 4G64 petrol engine with its All-Automobile model, while Beiqi Foton’s Landscape series offers both diesel and petrol options.
According to a product development manager at Nanjing Iveco, the company has long used the renowned Sophim diesel engine, which has gained widespread recognition among over 180,000 users nationwide. To better meet the diverse needs of customers, Nanjing Iveco became one of the first to introduce a petrol engine version of the Iveco model. The company conducted extensive testing to ensure optimal performance, achieving a balanced combination of diesel and petrol engines, making the product more versatile.
Lu Jiuping, General Manager of Guangzhou Shun Fuling Automobile Co., Ltd.’s Jiangling Shunshun Regional Office, also praised the Mitsubishi 4G64 petrol engine, noting that it performs almost identically to its diesel counterpart in terms of power and torque, with high combustion efficiency and mature technology. Additionally, these vehicles offer a quieter driving experience, combining economic efficiency with comfort.
Both engine types have their own strengths, offering more choices for government agencies, enterprises, institutions, and even private consumers. As the market continues to evolve, the dual-engine strategy is likely to become even more common in the light commercial vehicle sector.
