On the 6th of next month, the steel plant project of Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. will officially be launched, marking a significant milestone in the company's expansion. This joint venture with Japan's JFE is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of 5 million tons by 2010. Additionally, a shipbuilding base with a capacity of 3 million tons is set to be completed by 2008. These developments are part of broader efforts to boost Nansha's economic growth and industrial development.
Yesterday afternoon, Guangzhou Mayor Zhang Guangning, leading a delegation to Hong Kong for the "Guangdong-Hong Kong Cooperation and Common Development" event, met with Vice Chairman Huo Yingdong of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. During the meeting, Mayor Zhang provided a detailed update on the progress of major projects currently underway in Nansha, emphasizing that now is an ideal time to accelerate the development of the tertiary industry in the area.
The mayor also announced that today, over HK$1.13 billion in cooperation projects will be signed during the event. The delegation, consisting of officials from various municipal departments, district representatives, and more than 200 business leaders, participated in a five-day series of activities aimed at strengthening economic ties between Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
Mayor Zhang expressed deep appreciation for Huo Yingdong's long-standing contributions to Guangzhou’s economic growth and shared details about the upcoming events. He noted that over 250 state-owned and private enterprises were involved, with more than 300 participants attending. A total of HK$13.1 billion in trade and investment agreements are expected to be signed at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Meanwhile, construction at the Nansha Steel Works is accelerating. Zhang Guangning revealed that the Guangzhou Metro will be extended to Huangge by 2006–2007, connecting Xiao Nansha with the Nansha Passenger Port and providing a direct link between Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Additionally, the 50,000-ton-grade Nansha Port Area will be officially opened next month. The Guangzhou Toyota Motor Corporation is set to be formally listed on the 6th of next month, with its Toyota Motor City expected to reach an annual output value of 100 billion yuan by 2010.
In collaboration with JFE, the environmentally advanced steel plant is also moving forward, aiming for 5 million tons of annual production by 2010. Meanwhile, the 3-million-ton shipbuilding base in Nansha is scheduled to be completed by 2008, with the capability to construct 300,000-ton single-hull vessels.
Zhang Guangning also discussed with Fok Ying Tung the importance of developing Nansha's tertiary sector. He emphasized that as large-scale infrastructure projects come online, a growing number of workers and managers will move into the area, making it the right time to expand services such as retail, entertainment, and tourism. He added that Xiao Nansha is located at the heart of Da Nansha, offering great potential for future development.
Guangzhou hopes to transform Xiao Nansha into a new seaside city, as envisioned by Mr. Huo before 2010. The city pledged full support for this initiative, urging the Nansha Development Zone command to develop concrete plans to promote the vision. Fok Ying Tung expressed his gratitude for the visit and agreed that there is significant room for cooperation between Guangzhou and Hong Kong. He affirmed his confidence in building Xiao Nansha into a vibrant coastal city by 2010, highlighting the strong partnership between the two regions.
