"It's more important to have your own brand than anything else."

Liu Hanru, Chairman and General Manager of Anhui Hualing Motors Corporation, shared insights on the company's journey from a small state-owned factory to becoming a leading player in China’s engineering vehicle industry, with annual sales reaching 2 billion yuan. The rise of Anhui Xingma Automobile Stock Co., Ltd. was once called the "stardom phenomenon" by economist Li Yining. Recently, Hualing Auto Group launched its own brand heavy-duty truck, marking a new chapter for the company. Why did the leader in special vehicles enter the heavy truck market? Why did Xingma choose the Hualing brand, which carries national significance? In an increasingly competitive market, what lies ahead for China’s own auto brands? To explore these questions, we spoke with Liu Hanru, who emphasized that autonomy is key for China’s automotive industry. When asked why Xingma, a special-purpose vehicle manufacturer, decided to enter the heavy truck sector, Liu explained that the company needed around 2,000 to 3,000 imported heavy trucks annually, which came with high costs, long lead times, and exposure to exchange rate fluctuations and policy changes. To reduce dependency, they opted to develop their own chassis, saving costs and foreign exchange while boosting domestic manufacturing. The Hualing Heavy Duty Truck is not a joint venture but an independent brand, a decision made after initial talks with Mitsubishi were blocked by industrial policies. Instead, Hualing chose a technology transfer model, signing a ten-year agreement with Mitsubishi. While many joint ventures rely on foreign brands, Liu argued that this approach limits a company’s voice and independence. He believes that building a self-owned brand allows for greater control over the domestic market, capital accumulation, and international competitiveness. When questioned about the risk of falling into the “introduction-reintroduction” cycle, Liu highlighted that Hualing has developed intellectual property in key components like the cab and body, while powertrains are still imported. This balance allows them to maintain control and gradually build internal capabilities. Drawing parallels to China’s mobile phone and TV industries, he noted that self-branded products have successfully expanded globally, suggesting that the same can be achieved in the automotive sector. Looking ahead, Liu is confident that China can become a global leader in heavy truck manufacturing. With lower production costs compared to Europe and Japan, and a strong labor base, the industry has significant potential. He also stressed that developing a self-owned brand is a long-term process, similar to how top global companies evolved through gradual growth. While speed is important, patience and consistent improvement are equally vital. In conclusion, Liu emphasized that China is well-positioned to build a strong, independent automotive industry. With the right strategies and focus on innovation, the future of Chinese trucks on the global stage looks promising.
