Winter maintenance of the car

Winter car maintenance is essential to ensure your vehicle runs smoothly in cold weather. First, diesel vehicles should use the correct grade of diesel fuel. In winter, avoid using No. 0 diesel, which is suitable for summer. Instead, opt for winter diesel with a lower freezing point, such as No. 35 or higher, especially in colder regions like northern China. The number on the diesel label indicates its freezing point—No. 0 solidifies at 0°C, while No. 35 freezes at -35°C. If diesel gels, it can block fuel lines and prevent the engine from starting. In such cases, never try to melt it with an open flame; instead, let it thaw naturally or use warm water. Also, check and drain any moisture from the fuel filter to prevent ice buildup. Second, carbureted engines require attention during winter. Adjust the carburetor to create a richer fuel mixture for easier cold starts. If your car has a manual choke, make sure it moves freely. For automatic chokes, ensure they are working properly, as failures are common and can make starting difficult. Never pour gasoline directly into the intake, as this is dangerous. Instead, use a starting fluid if needed. For EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) engines, check the cold start nozzle and temperature/time switch. A faulty system can cause starting issues, so consider replacing the fuel filter before winter arrives. Third, the cooling system needs special care. Many drivers only replace antifreeze but neglect to inspect the entire system. Low coolant temperatures can damage the engine by reducing fuel atomization and washing away engine oil. To prepare for winter: first, use the right antifreeze, and if temperatures drop below 5°C, drain the water completely. Open all drain valves and the radiator cap. Second, preheat the engine with hot water before adding coolant. Third, ensure the radiator shutters close fully. Finally, check that the thermostat and fan clutch are functioning properly. Fourth, engine oil should be changed to a winter-grade oil. Summer oils have higher viscosity, while winter oils like 15W/40 are ideal for most cars. In extreme cold, consider 0W or 5W synthetic oil, though it’s more expensive and typically used in luxury vehicles. Don’t forget to check transmission and differential oils as well—they should also be replaced with winter-grade options. Fifth, battery maintenance is crucial. Cold weather can reduce battery performance. Check the electrolyte level and specific gravity, which should be around 1.28–1.30 g/cm³ when charged. If the battery is old or weak, replace it. Keep it charged regularly and protect it from extreme cold to avoid failure. Lastly, driving techniques differ in winter. For carbureted cars, gently press the accelerator before starting and pull the choke fully. After starting, gradually release the choke. If the engine doesn’t start, wait 30 seconds between attempts. Avoid overusing the starter. If the exhaust smells oily, the car may be flooded—wait and then press the throttle. Once started, let the engine warm up until the temperature reaches 40–50°C before driving. Even for EFI engines, a short warm-up period helps protect the engine.
