As more light commercial vehicle manufacturers shift their focus toward petrol models, the dual-engine competition strategy has become increasingly evident in this sector. While gasoline engines have traditionally dominated the broader automotive market, diesel engines remain the preferred choice for light passenger vehicles due to their reliability and fuel efficiency. However, with rising competition among manufacturers, especially in the light passenger segment, the trend of offering both petrol and diesel options is gaining momentum.
Nanjing Iveco recently launched its new petrol engine model, following the release of the Turin V diesel engine in March this year. The company has now introduced a gasoline-powered commercial vehicle as well. According to an official from the manufacturer, the Mitsubishi 4G64 multi-split petrol engine used in the Turin V model delivers a maximum power of 135 horsepower and a peak torque of 200 Nm. These models are primarily targeted at 10- to 13-seat configurations, with prices comparable to diesel versions, ranging from 150,000 to 160,000 yuan. This pricing makes them highly competitive in the market.
The first batch of these vehicles will be available in seven key regions: Beijing, Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Guangdong. The Turin V series is designed to be versatile, with multiple variants available. It includes different wheelbases—2800mm and 3310mm—and seating capacities ranging from 9 to 17. The models come in various body styles, such as high-top, mid-top, van door, rear door, side sliding door, luxury, and standard configurations. The gasoline engine version is also part of this extensive lineup.
According to the company’s product development officer, the Turin V series is one of the most comprehensive product lines in the market, and new models are expected to launch every month. By the end of this year, the full range of Turin V products is expected to be completed. The dual-engine approach allows manufacturers to cater to diverse customer needs, offering flexibility in terms of performance, cost, and usage scenarios.
Nanjing Iveco is not the only manufacturer adopting a dual-engine strategy. Jiangling previously paired the Mitsubishi 4G64 petrol engine with its All-Automobile model, while Beiqi Foton’s Landscape series also offers diesel options. More light commercial vehicle producers are now embracing this approach to meet the growing demand for varied choices.
The general manager of Guangzhou Shunfuling Automobile Co., Ltd.’s Jiangling Shunshun Regional Branch, Lu Jiuping, noted that the transit vehicles equipped with the Mitsubishi 4G64 petrol engine perform similarly to their diesel counterparts in terms of power and torque. They also offer high combustion efficiency, mature technology, and excellent overall performance. Additionally, these vehicles are quieter during operation, providing better comfort and economy compared to diesel models.
Each engine type has its own advantages, giving governments, enterprises, and private users more options to choose from based on their specific requirements. As the market continues to evolve, the dual-engine strategy is likely to become even more widespread, driven by consumer demand and technological advancements.
