UNEP praises China's "plastic limit order"

China has recently introduced new regulations to limit the use of plastic bags in an effort to combat "white pollution." Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has publicly praised this move. In a written interview with Xinhua News Agency reporters, Steiner stated, "This is a positive and forward-thinking decision that reflects the global movement to address the environmental impact of plastic bags." He emphasized that as a country with a significant global influence, China's actions could set an example for other nations in Asia and beyond, encouraging more sustainable practices worldwide. Steiner pointed out that plastic bags pose serious threats to the environment. Not only do they create visual pollution, but they also endanger wildlife, leading to the death of animals and livestock when ingested. Additionally, they often clog urban sewage systems, causing major infrastructure problems. He believes that banning ultra-thin plastic bags, promoting reusable alternatives, and supporting recycling initiatives can significantly raise public awareness about environmental protection. Regarding the policy that prohibits retailers from offering free plastic shopping bags, Steiner said, "Charging for plastic bags can generate revenue that can be reinvested into municipal recycling programs. It can also help reduce labor costs in the environmental sector, such as waste management and recycling. Moreover, industries that produce eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags—like biodegradable or fabric-based options—are likely to benefit from these changes." Overall, Steiner sees China's initiative as a meaningful step toward a more sustainable future, one that aligns with global efforts to reduce plastic waste and protect the planet.
