China has recently introduced new regulations to limit the use of plastic bags in an effort to combat "white pollution." Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has praised this move as a significant step forward.
In a written interview with Xinhua News Agency reporters, Steiner expressed his appreciation for China's decision, calling it a positive and timely action that aligns with global efforts to address plastic bag pollution. He emphasized that as one of the world's largest countries, China's approach could set a powerful example for other nations in Asia and beyond.
Steiner highlighted the environmental dangers posed by plastic bags, noting that they not only mar the landscape but also pose serious threats to wildlife and livestock. Additionally, discarded plastic bags often clog urban sewage systems, leading to costly maintenance issues. He believes that banning ultra-thin plastic bags, promoting reusable alternatives, and encouraging recycling can significantly raise public awareness about environmental protection.
Regarding the policy of charging for plastic shopping bags, Steiner pointed out that the revenue generated from such charges could be reinvested into municipal recycling programs. This funding could also help reduce labor costs in the environmental sector, including waste management and recycling operations. Moreover, industries that produce eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags—such as those using natural fibers—could see substantial benefits from these changes.
